We all needed distraction in 2020. Here are some of my highlights, so maybe you find something to enjoy from the list.
Media that helped me through 2020
Podcasts
Unfortunately no podcasts listed have transcripts. The inaccessibility of podcasts is a really big problem.
Tech
-
Relay FM is a podcast network that hosts some of my favorite tech-related podcasts: Upgrade, Connected, Automators and Mac Power Users.
-
Let me single out Relay FM show 20 Macs for 2020 here, which looked back at the most notable Macs until now. There is a series of articles and YouTube videos that complement the podcast (or vice-versa?).
-
Nested Folders – A productivity podcast.
Non-Tech
-
The Incomparable is a popular culture network. I love their TV series recaps, the main show which has panels about a lot of topics and Total Party Kill, the Dungeons and Dragons podcast (start with the Dragonforge & Associates campaign or the ongoing Dog and Pony Show series). They also do an incredibly funny Gameshow. If you consume popular culture, you’ll find something that you like there.
-
Several Doctor Who podcasts, including Verity, Radio Free Skaro, Reality Bomb and Five Years Rapid.
-
Writing & Breathing is an interview show where writer Antony Johnston interviews other writers about their processes. It’s been a great inspiration to write more, and while that has not resulted in more blog posts, the scripts for my YouTube videos have been directly inspired by it.
TV/Streaming
All TV series have captions and many also have Audio Descriptions. The accessibility options on Apple+ are especially plentiful, captions & subtitles in many languages and audio description in about 10 languages.
-
Doctor Who helped me in two ways: First, the new series that ran from January to March was really good. Second, the announcement of a “festive special” at the end of the year gave me something to look forward to. In addition, the animated miniseries DALEKS! was shown on Youtube.
-
The Mandalorian on Disney+ had two very good seasons released this year (because Europe got Disney+ a few months late it was all released last year for us). In addition, Disney Gallery is the behind the scenes series that covers the fascinating technology used filming it.
Dan Moren published a fantastic recap podcast on The Incomparable called A Complicated Profession.
The Mandalorian also let me to start watching the animated Clone Wars series.
-
Ted Lasso on Apple TV+ is a comedy and starts with the classical fish out of water tropes, but quickly allows peeks behind the curtains and then turns all the preconceived notions on their heads. It’s just 10 short 30 minute episodes, and I can’t wait for season two!
-
For All Mankind is an alternative history that explores what would have happened if the USSR had won the race to the moon. Also Apple TV+.
-
Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet is a comedy about the work in a game development studio and I enjoyed the humor in it quite a lot. They also shot a socially distanced special which is super heartwarming.
-
Killing Eve is a fascinating spy thriller series about a serial killer and an intelligence officer. When the two women’s paths cross, they discover what they have in common. It’s quite violent at times, but an incredible interesting story. (Unfortunately, the version of Killing Eve that I watched through the Apple TV Starz Channel had terrible captions.)
